Strength:

Power out the wazoo. Easy on the ears, transparent. Used it's a real steal! Anyone who needs a better amp than this needs to get out more. A lot more!! This amp is quite good. - hedge trimming christchurch

Weakness:

Well, it's solid state, but quite good nonetheless.

Strength:

Almost makes rock music sound thin and "polite" when combined with the very smooth upper end. I am running Paradigm Ref 100's (v2) and everything including the powercord was the same between the two comparisons. Yuba City Mobile Truck Repair

I have almost 30 years experiences in HiFi. This is to review Adcom GFA 5800 system which I preferred most for very LOUD music @ real concert level and average electricity bill. My best set up I found is, * Power Amplifer: 2 x Adcom GFA 5800, # 1 st Adcom GFA 5800 for Right Speaker // 1 st Adcom Right Channel : High Frequency // 1 st Adcom Left Channel : Low Frequency, # 2 nd Adcom GFA 5800 for Left Speaker // 2 nd Adcom Right Channel : High Frequency // 2 nd Adcom Left Channel : Low Frequency, * Preamplifier: 2 x NAD 1020, # 1 st NAD 1020 : // Right Channel : Y-Splitter to Left and Right RCA input of # 1 st Adcom GFA 5800, # 2 nd NAD 1020 : // Right Channel : Y-Splitter to Left and Right RCA input of # 2 nd Adcom GFA 5800, * DAC: California Audio Labs Master Series SC 10 96/24 with Sylvania 5751 Triple Mica Black/Grey Plates, * Transport: Samsung Blueray Player, * Cable: All custom Litz 9 Cores 22 awg Silver Plated Copper Cables, * Speaker: Cerwin Vega XLS-215 (Bigger image) / CLS-15 (Bass is deeper, smaller image than XLS-215), *I currently have KRELL KRC-HR(Most precise detail, very transparent, very sweet, liquid top to bottom with real 3D image. Best for vocal, string @ non-concert level), KBL Dual Mono x 2 (Best clean and clear precise detail, very transparent, sweet, with real 3D image, best dynamic, a lot of weight and impact, great for very loud music @ real concert level), KSP-7B x 2 (a lot better than single unit,Clean and clear not very detail, very transparent, sweet, with real 3D image, very dynamic, a lot of weight and impact, great for medium not loud music), KSA-150 x 2 (Very sweet, real vocal or string and great Bass), McCormack DNA 0.5 Revision A Gold/ 0.5 (very detail, sweet vocal to top most), Deluxe (less detail, sweet vocal, punch bass, can not too loud), Adcom GFA-656 Mono x 2 (dry transparent midrange to top, great bass, great impact). Rogers 3/5a (very sweet and precise image but not too loud), Rogers DB 101(Similar to 3/5 but louder),Celestion SL600, 6, 6si (very clear and precise image but not too loud) I like the Adcom 5800 with the above s

Weakness:

McCormack DNA 0.5 Revision A Gold is very Clear with Precise Image , quick precise real upper Bass, lack very low Bass wight, top most very details, delicate, Very real sweet singer is singing with floating image infront of the speakers while drum plays behind the speakers, big band is playing. Can not play in real life concert volume. Better use to drive Right/Left Mid-High frequency while McCormack DNA 0.5 Deluxe drive Right/Left Low frequency. It will be a lot louder with more dynamic weight impact at low frequency.//// Twin Adcom 5800 More like McCormack DNA 0.5 Revision A Gold with Bigger image and Louder, quick precise real upper Bass with weight attack, top most very details, delicate and loud. Very real singer is singing (sweet but less sweet than McCormack & Krell) with floating image infront of the speakers while drum plays behind the speakers with impact I can feel, very big image. Can play in real life concert volume with very clean and clear plus little sweet on top high. I can feel the air and floor vibration impact to me. / For single Adcom 5800 amplifier, the sound is good but the bass focus weight and impact is less. Extreme treble is Twin Adcom 5800 with my set up is the best. I can hear and feel real concert level image. / Most systems need at least 30 minutes to warm up and best after 1 hours. Single amp is normal but twin dual mono from mono-pre to mono-power is miracle with the above set up. Even twin KBL + twin KSA-150 is also very good but not as open up the top end and speed as Adcom and bigger electricity bill., In summary my Ranking: * Adcom best at real concert level. Low electricity bill. * Krell best at bottom end with weight, very liquid, airy and great sweet vocal or string at moderate level, critical listening for real human or real instrument. * McCormack great for pop, jazz, sweet vocal or string, delicate smooth top most at moderate to low level.

Strength:

This amp is one of my truly powerful amps. Solid state 250 watts per channel. Clean, undistorted sound. It is one of Nelson Pass's excellent design.

Weakness:

It's heavy! It weighs 65 lbs. It uses a lot of electricity.

This is an amazing amp and is everything Adcom planed and expected of it. At first I was a little disappointed expecting a bit more from it, more meaning clarity and sharpness. The power is there no doubt this amp puts out no complaints there. When I purchased my system I also bought the Adcom preamp and CD player expecting matched perfection. I was quite impressed for the dollars spent especially hearing it all through Dunlavy III speakers. Amazing, even in less than ideal room setup it is so pleasing to listen to, that was until the preamp went south and then the CD player shortly after both only lasting about 4 years. This is when I discovered the adcom preamp wasn't doing the amp justice. Let me explain. I Purchased another Adcom preamp on ebay being true to the brand thinking it was best for the system since all were made to match with one another, not the case. The newly purchased (used) Adcom preamp sounding exactly exactly like the old (which I thought was spectacular) However, the new unit had a glitch in one of the controls no biggie I paid just $110 for it so I went back on ebay but saw no Adcom units but did come across a NAD preamp model number 1130. This is NAD's second from bottom line from what I can tell. It turned out to be the right buy the new found sound coming from the Dunlavys was OMG! The open clarity, sharpness, crispness and depth of bass! WOW! It just opened everything up and plays with so much more power compared to Adcom's preamps. Who-da-thunk such a simple preamp from another manufacturer could be so different? My 5800 amp and Dunlavy speakers found new life just as I did as well when listening to my system. My Adcom amp and Dunlavy IIIs after 22 years still sound amazing. To anyone out there with an Adcom GFE 5800 amp, you must try the NAD preamp, I paid $100 on ebay for mine, what a bargain! What a sound!

When I saw the fan on the back I thought!
Will this be good then!

I connected to the Silencio trio from Basund audio!
BI wire. Adcom 5800 on top. and Basund audio's Potent amp on the bottom.

The sound literally rolled out of the speakers, detail-rich and the pressure.
it played so loud that, the microphone that we measured with turned inside out!
This I had not really imagined!
Now I am looking for a smaller amplifier
The bass did not play so loud (108 dB) so I have to down size on top.

Regards Johnny Borge båsund

Strength:

None. There is no strength I can vote for.

Weakness:

Poor definition. Lack of clarity. Weak muddy bass

II bought this amp new based on the good reviews from previous Adcom amps and the reputation Adcom had. This amp uses MOSFET drivers which they called HEXFETs, as opposed to bipolar transistor in the majority of other amplifiers. I wanted a tube like sound with the bass control of solid state amplifier and the Adcom GFA-5800 provided the best of both worlds - so I thought.

Well, I was disappointed. The sound was poorly defined with total lack of clarity. I was using the Mission 753 speakers which are not difficult to drive so I can't point the finger on the speaker as a contributing factor. It sounded like I was listening to it behind a thick curtain. No imaging, music sounded dead. I compared it to the Sony TA-N77ES amp and the sound was miles apart. The Sony amp was clear, defined, a little bit harsh but much more involving. The Onkyo M-508 was even better. The bass for well controlled and the mid range has good imaging I used the Adcom amp for two years hoping it would break in with time but it never did improved.

It has been a while since I last heard it but the bad experience remains vividly etched in my mind and I feel compelled to write this review. This product gets a 1 star from me.

Strength:

Rock solid build quality and reliability. Great sonics (It's NOT "steely".) Best bang for the buck. Period.

Weakness:

It doesn't do windows or feed the cat.

Dunno what all the fuss is about from the naysayers. I've used my 5800 since 1997 without any probs. (Oh, it "bumps" momentarily at turn on - big deal...) It's now 2005. Mine's driving a pair of VMPS Tower IIs. Yes, it would be nice to have the fan-less 5802, but my 5800's fans never intrude - just a soft whisper right at the amp. (Might have something to do with the Tower IIs 92 dB/watt efficiency and an impedence curve that never drops below 4 ohms - I doubt my 5800 has ever shifted out of Class A mode.)
